----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The New Ventures West website answers this question and we will say something here as well. Integral Coaching is unique in that it includes the entire person in the coaching engagement to maximize the client’s ability to:
These outcomes are far beyond—deeper and more long lasting than—traditional coaching, which is about achieving a goal, solving a problem, merely moving the client into action.
By “the entire person” I mean his/her interior life, the physiology and behavior of the body, her/his social/cultural world, and the physical environment he/she is in with its ability to support and limit. This is also what is meant by the term “integral.”
We emphasize the centrality of the coaching relationship, based in the coach’s ability to be present, to attune to the client and relate to the client as a living being—as someone who is interacting with the situation in every moment and therefore always changing—and not to relate to the client as a thing that can be described in concepts and manipulated with rewards and punishments.
While many people use the Enneagram in coaching to provide simple “prescriptions” for the nine types that generally have very limited effectiveness, a more powerful use is to support the coach in broadening and deepening her awareness of her own prejudices and assumptions when dealing with clients. Sooner or later, even highly experienced coaches—through a combination of their own blind spots, unconscious preferences and habits of mind—will encounter someone they cannot quite understand. The Enneagram is a fantastic resource for such a moment. The coach can discover his/her own blind spots and fixations that are distorting the relationship with the client. At the same time coaches can find many new ways they can be opening up fresh perspectives for knowing and appreciating their clients.
Our class beautifully leverages the common ground of the Enneagram Institute and New Ventures West. Both organizations place big emphasis on presence, on recognizing the profound goodness in each person and their positive intentions, and on knowing and operating from our human capacity to unfold towards what is more true, more life giving. Our methods don’t clash but complement.
The Enneagram side can bring greater depth and the coaching side brings a practical developmental path. In our class we weave these two ingredients together over and again, demonstrating what is possible while exercising great respect for each other and for what each method brings.
What are the top 5 questions Russ and James normally get (and what are the answers) about coaching?
1) Will I learn how to coach each Enneagram type?
We will describe and demonstrate how to do Integral Coaching informed by the Enneagram but we do not teach or encourage mechanical thinking or coaching (i.e., If your client is a Seven, then ask this, or recommend that, etc.). We discourage using the Enneagram this way because it attempts to coach from the wrong part of the person. The rote learning of such protocols does not engage the coach’s presence, sensitivity, or creative inspiration. We also do not teach this mechanistic approach to coaching with the Enneagram simply because it does not work. The Enneagram itself shows us that there are many dynamic forces in play in a person all the time, and the chances that an individual will exactly correspond to a memorized set of protocols is quite low. For example, there are many important variations of types of Seven, and even if we know each variation, we need to remember that each one is also primarily a living being who in a given moment is going through absolutely unique life experiences. We simply cannot contain all of that in a model. We have to discover the particulars of this person's life, and not be prejudiced by what we might expect to find by knowing the client as a Seven.
2) Do have to know the Enneagram and/or Integral Coaching to be in the class?
Of course it’s helpful if you know something about either or both disciplines, however; if you don’t know anything about the Enneagram please read The Wisdom of the Enneagram and if you are unfamiliar with this type of coaching please read Coaching–Evoking Excellence in Others. We have had individuals attend the course who were new to the Enneagram or to coaching, and in both cases the reading gave them a good foundation in how to work with these systems.
3) Will this class be advanced enough? I already know something about these topics.
All we can tell you is that it is new and exciting for both James and Russ each time because we continue to discover new dimensions of this work every time we teach it. And in previous courses, even highly experienced coaches and Enneagram teachers have been excited about the content. At the same time, what we are teaching is very experiential and related to daily life, so one does not need to know a great deal of jargon to participate in the course.
4) In what ways will you go beyond just talking about the Enneagram types? What else will we learn about?
We do learn certain key elements and themes about the types, but more from a perspective of different ingredients a coach or a client may need. We also spend a good deal of time looking at the three instincts (or subtypes) as key areas to work with, and as pivotal to creating balance for the client. We will be using models and teachings both from The Enneagram Institute and from New Ventures West to support the development of the participants and to provide a broader range of insights into clients. It is also worth saying that after teaching this course a number of times, James and Russ are able to weave these different teachings together in new ways.
5) How experiential is this program?
The short answer is “very.” There is no shortage of new material, and even the more familiar material is understood in new ways given the new contexts that we are exploring. But there are inquiry exercises, music meditations, coaching demonstrations, and lots of hands-on instruction in using the Enneagram in the coaching context. You will come out of this a better coach or facilitator, and you will have new experiences of yourself to bring to the world.
